A commission

I recently finished a commission for my mother. She wanted some small works on paper depicting my Dad’s farm as a gift for him. We took some photos of the farm and a ruined cottage there, and she picked out which photos she liked best.

I decided to use pen and ink (or fineliner) with subdued watercolour, after I did a couple of roughs that she didn’t like. I photographed some of the work in progress and she ok’d them so I did some more. Now they just need framing. I hope my Dad likes them; I think they’ve turned out well.

The way home – water colours

I’ve just finished painting a series of water colours of my train trip home from Flinders Street Station to Yarraville. It’s a trip I’ve taken many times, and when I arrived home it was ‘the blue hour’ – twilight.

Recent printmaking

Last semester in printmaking I made a series of prints using my local industrial landscape of Melbourne’s inner west as inspiration.

These are photopolymer prints from my photograph of an electricity pylon and the West Gate Bridge.

I also did some drypoint etchings, some of which I hand coloured with water colour and ink.

I’ve been really busy with my day job and study lately, but have finally added two more watercolours to the Palimpsest series. Sorry about the poor photo quality, these were taken with my iphone. By the way, I’m officially addicted to iphone. Darn it.

This is the beginning of a new series based on a ‘poster wall’ in Yarraville I pass every day walking home from the train station. I’ve photographed it several times and now I’m working from my photos, painting small watercolours.

1. A manuscript or piece of writing material on which the original writing has been effaced to make room for later writing.
2. Something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form.

I’ve always found drawing people difficult, and have avoided it. But have decided to try more portraiture, as a challenge.

One a day

I was getting frustrated with myself for not doing enough work… I think not having a studio at the moment isn’t helping. But maybe that’s just an excuse. Anyway I decided to set myself the challenge of doing at least one drawing, sketch or small painting every day for a month. Here are the first few… I haven’t got anything for yesterday but I was printmaking at Uni all day and I made a few nice prints, but didn’t photograph them.
